my gaming consoles as a kid

Starting off strong, I remember when I was real little, in 1st-2nd grade I had a pink metallic Nintendo DS Lite.

I played Nintendogs and Cooking Mama. I dropped it on the pavement of the parking lot of that elementary school (from like 2 feet off the ground; that’s how tall I remember being) and it wouldn’t turn on anymore. My dogs got to live on in my next console: the DSi XL. Specifically the super Mario 25th anniversary edition. I hear this one is collectible now?

This was my main thing the rest of elementary school, 3rd-6th grade. My favorite games were flipnote, Ice Age 3, various pet simulators like Petz and more Nintendogs, and Imagine: Boutique Owner. I had friends who I would watch flipnotes with, and I made some myself. Back then you could upload your animations to the Hatena, and watch everyone’s videos.

I know that pictochat chat rooms were a thing, I know I joined a big chat room at my 3rd grade end-of-year party that everyone brought their DS’s to. I know I drew out the word “FUCK” in huge bubble letters for some anarchy and one of my classmates told the teacher. I know that Mrs. Kernan (MRS. She would always talk about her husband) told me never drop the “F-Bomb” again and my mom had to come pick me up from the party early.

Then one amazing Christmas, I got a 3DS XL. I remember it came with the new Nintendogs (+Cats) to keep the tradition going. I also remember there was a cool new app called 3DS Video. It would showcase 4 different YouTube videos every so often it would change, and it would be music videos, comedy sketches (like Dinosaur Office), animations…

One day when I went on 3DS Video I saw The Shins – The Rifle’s Spiral and that’s where my amazing music taste really showed itself. I love The Shins still and that song plus another one called Simple Song have a special place in my heart.

On this device I played Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the first time. I was hooked from the start, it was awesome! I’m still a big fan of AC and hope the next game after this one (New Horizons) is a little more like New Leaf in some ways.

That’s about all. I got my Nintendo Switch in high school, when it came out. I didn’t really play it much until later though because I was busy being depressed. Now I play it a lot, mainly Stardew Valley!
