the feeling of “seasonal magic” and how to feel it in adulthood

Everyone knows how the holidays – whether Halloween, Christmas, whatever – felt when we were younger. It felt more vibrant, more intensely ~holiday magic~. I’ll mainly be focusing on autumnal feelings, since that’s the time of year we’re in right now.

Currently it is October 1st, the first day of spooky month. I feel it in full swing, and have for a couple weeks now.

I think the reason we felt it more intensely as kids is it’s because of the lack of obligations that get in the way and distract from this magic. We have more time for activities relating to the holiday, like trick or treating or going to a pumpkin patch.

So how do we feel the same way? We won’t feel the exact same way, because nostalgia will always win. Focus on yourself changing as a person as the seasons change.

For me at least… the key is to take breaks and escape your monotony, and to participate in childlike wonder in your daily life. It’s easier said than done; just try to see things on their own, instead of in conjunction with work and school and whatever else is in your busy life. It doesn’t have to be a long activity like a corn maze, it can be taking time to watch the leaves fall, and clearing your mind of anything except that, for as long as you can. Appreciate the trees changing color, even a few minutes of this slowness can add up.

I decided to go leaf peeping today with my amazing boyfriend! It was very relaxing and activated the autumnal part of me very much. I feel like I have the feeling of seasonal magic again. I didn’t have it for years, I was stuck in a depression where I was only focused on getting through life and not truly living.

Aspens!

I’m not fully out of it yet, but I feel my depression getting better. I’m sure it’ll come back in full force for winter but I’m enjoying the yellow leaves for now!
