my history with my favorite band

I am a huge fan of the band Fall Out Boy. I have been listening to them since I was in elementary school, but became obsessed by middle school. In high school I tried to hide my love for the band and fit in, but now I proudly say I’m a fan. Here’s my history up until now!

One of my prized possessions, a signed poster.

It started with listening to Sugar We’re Goin Down in the backseat of the car on the way to kindergarten in around 2008. My aunt who was driving had a CD she burned of a bunch of songs she liked, this being a track in the middle of the playlist. I demanded the song be played a lot, I recall! One day I asked her to make me a CD with the song on it so I could listen to it at home. I was unable to grasp the concept of multiple tracks on a CD apparently, and asked for another when I put it into the player and a different song started. I didn’t know the name of the band at that point, but I knew I loved that song.

In 6th grade, 2013, I downloaded a popular radio song called Light Em Up onto my iPhone 5. I liked it a lot, but never looked into it or registered that it was Fall Out Boy either.

Finally, in 2015 when I was in 8th grade, the movie Big Hero 6 came out! I wanted to see it in theaters but didn’t for some reason. My mom, dad, and I decided to watch it at home when it came out for streaming. At this point in time, my mom and I fought a lot; this night was no different. I remember storming off to the kitchen at a midpoint of the film, and my parents kept watching while I sulked in the next room. I could still hear the audio, and I distinctly remember listening to Immortals playing in what I now know is the suit-up scene. I looked up lyrics I was hearing on SoundHound, then walked to my room, typing the song that came up into YouTube. I put in my headphones, and in the recommended videos sidebar I saw the songs I had listened to years before: Sugar We’re Goin Down and Light Em Up. I couldn’t believe I had found them again!!

From there, I fell neck deep into the world of Fall Out Boy: their history, the band members, album lore, and older songs. My admiration for them kept growing, and I got to see them in concert for the first time at the 2015 Boys Of Zummer tour, with their opener Wiz Khalifa.

I got my first tattoo in 2019 at 17 of an album cover of theirs, Believers Never Die. I have since gotten 3 more tattoos inspired by the band.

I have been to 5 more tours of theirs after the first one! Wintour, Mania, Hella Mega, So Much (for) Tour Dust, and most recently 2OURDUST. I travelled to Portland to see the first stop on this go around!

I’m planning on going to every tour of theirs in the future, and am in the process of drawing up another FOB tattoo. If I ever meet them (which I’m terrified of but also viscerally want), I would ask Pete Wentz, the bassist and lyricist, to write out a lyric for me. “We did it for futures that never came, and for pasts that we’re never gonna change” from their song Fake Out. Thats what I’d get tattooed, his handwriting!

Im still finding meaning in my life thanks in part to their music. I’m still listening to them in the car. And Pete still hasn’t changed his Instagram profile picture since 2015. Seasons change but people don’t!
